We're well within that window of opportunity for planting tomatoes, herbs, and peppers. As you make your rounds at the market, consider two producers who journey from the Baraboo Hills to the DCFM. They are instrumental in bringing
quality plants to the market.
Brad and Erin Wilson, from Cabin Creek Herbs love the "awesome customers" they've cultivated over the past 15 years of vending at the DCFM. If you are looking for that special tomato or pepper plant for your garden, Cabin Creek offers plenty to choose from.
"Right now is the perfect time to plant tomatoes," says Brad. "I've got around 32 varieties of heirloom tomatoes and five varieties of hybrids. I sell a variety of peppers as well." Though he does sell out quickly, "All are available at the market." Peppers, he notes, can go into the ground within the next few weeks.
Named by Erin because, "We live in a cabin near a creek," Brad says Sun Gold cherry tomatoes have been a best seller for the past two years. "I grow noncertified organic," he explains, "in that I grow totally organic but am not certified."
Brad says there is really no "best" heirloom tomato. "There are so many different kinds that it's more dependent on the size, color, and taste that you prefer." Chances are with the 32 varieties of heirlooms offered by Cabin Creek, there's sure to be a tomato variety for you. Cabin Creek Herbs can be found on West Main Street at the Saturday Dane County Farmers’ Market.
